NEW DELHI, July 3 (ANI) — As India continues to strengthen engagement across its maritime neighborhood, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a three-nation visit to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand from July 8-11.
The visit to Indonesia will focus on reviewing the bilateral partnership, while in Australia, Modi will participate in the third India-Australia Annual Summit. During the final leg of the trip, he will visit New Zealand, becoming the first Indian prime minister to do so in 40 years.
Addressing a special press briefing ahead of the visit, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East) Rudrendra Tandon said, “The Prime Minister will be visiting Indonesia on July 8 and 9. After that, he’ll be in Melbourne, Australia, on July 10 and then New Zealand on July 11.”
Providing details of the itinerary, Tandon said the Prime Minister’s primary engagements in Indonesia will take place in the capital, Jakarta. Modi will also visit the cultural center of Yogyakarta, including the Prambanan Temple complex, where India plans to collaborate with Indonesia on conservation work.
Tandon noted that while the past two weeks had focused on the western Indian Ocean through Modi’s visits to Mauritius and Seychelles, along with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent trip to New Delhi, the upcoming visits to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand shift India’s attention toward the eastern maritime region and reinforce its Act East policy.
Highlighting Indonesia’s strategic importance, particularly its role in the security and stability of the Strait of Malacca, Tandon recalled that the two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Modi’s 2018 visit to Indonesia.
“The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that was first put in place when Prime Minister Modi visited Indonesia in 2018 has become a major building block of India’s Act East policy and the MAHASAGAR vision over these last few years. Indonesia is also a key country within the ASEAN grouping that has been playing collectively a very important role in strengthening the rules-based order in this region,” Tandon said.
He added that the leaders will review bilateral ties and seek to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors, including maritime security, defense, trade, economic relations, and people-to-people exchanges.
“The visit to Indonesia will be very much a continuation of the conversation on various bilateral tracks of cooperation that began when President Prabowo visited India as the guest of honor in 2025 for the 76th Republic Day celebrations,” he said.
Tandon said that in Melbourne, Prime Minister Modi will participate in the third India-Australia Annual Summit, an institutional mechanism established under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed in 2020.
“The conversations will cover emerging areas of bilateral relations, in particular the critical cybersecurity domain, supply chain resilience, and emerging technologies. After Australia, the Prime Minister will be in New Zealand, where he will hold discussions with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon,” Tandon said.
The MEA secretary also highlighted the growing momentum in India-New Zealand relations following Luxon’s visit to India in 2025.
“The visit to New Zealand is historic because it will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 40 years,” Tandon said.
Luxon attended the Raisina Dialogue 2025 as the chief guest and keynote speaker. (ANI)
