Hanoi, Vietnam, July 13 (ANI): The mortal remains of the 15 Indian nationals who died in the Vietnam boat tragedy are being flown from Ho Chi Minh City to Mumbai and are expected to arrive Monday evening, the Indian Embassy in Hanoi said.
In a post on X, the embassy said the remains departed aboard Vietnam Airlines Flight VN979 and are scheduled to arrive in Mumbai at 9:30 p.m. local time.
The governments of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu will coordinate the transportation of the mortal remains to their final destinations in their respective states.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City expressed gratitude to the authorities of the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang Province, the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other agencies for their assistance following the tragic boat accident.
The embassy also thanked the people of Vietnam for their condolences and support during the tragedy.
“We are grateful for the many messages of condolences and prayers from our Vietnamese friends. Your prayers, efforts and presence gave us strength in this extreme hour of grief,” the embassy said.
Meanwhile, Andhra Bhavan said detailed arrangements had been finalized for the transfer of the mortal remains arriving from Vietnam through the intervention of Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and in consultation with the Embassy of India in Vietnam.
Earlier Sunday night, several survivors from Andhra Pradesh who were involved in the tragic speedboat accident off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island arrived at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.
At least 15 people, including Indian tourists, were killed after a speedboat carrying 36 people capsized near Phu Quoc Island on Saturday, according to the Vietnamese newspaper VN Express.
According to the Embassy of India in Vietnam, the victims included 10 people from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh, and two from Kerala.
VN Express, citing authorities in the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, reported that the speedboat, operated by Ocean Pear Island Company, was transporting tourists from Hon May Rut Islet to An Thoi Port, about 16 miles (25 kilometers) from Phu Quoc Airport, when it overturned Saturday afternoon, throwing everyone on board into the sea.
