WASHINGTON, D.C., July 21: US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order aimed at strengthening America’s defense supply chains, with a focus on securing critical materials and components needed for the manufacture of military equipment.
According to a White House fact sheet, the order directs the Department of War to begin regulatory action requiring more comprehensive supply chain mapping for critical supply chains designated by the Secretary of War.
The order also encourages defense contractors to qualify new domestic sources of critical minerals, materials, and components used in designated national security procurements from domestic and partner-nation suppliers while removing regulatory barriers in the qualification process.
Additionally, the order limits the circumstances under which the Secretary of Defense may issue waivers for sourcing critical materials from covered nations under 10 U.S.C. 4872. In certain cases, it requires mitigation plans to shift supply chains back to domestic production.
The White House said that despite longstanding restrictions on the use of sensitive materials sourced from geopolitical adversaries, supply chain resilience and domestic production have historically been under-prioritized.
It said that as competition among major powers intensifies, the United States must secure its supply chains against physical, cyber, and economic threats to maintain its strategic advantage.
The fact sheet also highlighted previous executive orders signed by President Trump to strengthen America’s defense capabilities.
These include a February 2026 executive order establishing the America First Arms Transfer Strategy to ensure the US industrial base remains the “Arsenal of Freedom” for the United States and its allies.
Other measures cited include a January 2025 executive order to modernize defense acquisitions and promote innovation in the defense industrial base, a March 2025 order to boost domestic mineral production, streamline permitting, and strengthen national security, and an April 2025 order further advancing defense acquisition reforms and industrial innovation.
The White House said the latest executive order reflects President Trump’s campaign pledge to rebuild America’s military equipment and supplies, restore military readiness, and secure reliable sources of critical materials.
According to the fact sheet, the initiative forms part of the administration’s broader effort to ensure continued US military dominance through stronger and more resilient defense supply chains. (ANI)
