WASHINGTON, June 30 (ANI) — President Donald Trump said Monday that the Reflecting Pool in Washington has been restored to full operation over the past 48 hours and announced plans to temporarily drain it after the Fourth of July to repair damage to its waterproof lining.
Trump also warned that anyone caught vandalizing historic monuments and memorials in the nation’s capital could face up to 10 years in prison.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump blamed what he described as “vandals and Radical Left SCUM” for the damage to the Reflecting Pool.
“The Reflecting Pool, which suffered great damage due to the Vandals and Radical Left SCUM that hate our Country, has been, for the past two days, in full operation. It looks beautiful! After July 4th, we will release the water, fix the damage done to the very expensive waterproof matting, with the use of sharp knives and muscle, including the 350-foot gash along its right side, and have it looking as good as it was two weeks ago, when it was absolutely PERFECT!” Trump wrote.
He also warned against further acts of vandalism targeting federal monuments.
“This will all happen very quickly. Security is watching very carefully for the almost 70 other Monuments, Statues, and Fountains that we renovated throughout Washington, D.C. If anyone attacks any of them, they get as much as 10 years in jail. In any event, go check it out — The Reflecting Pool is magnificent! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he added.
The announcement comes as U.S. law enforcement agencies prepare for an intensive security period ahead of the nation’s 250th Independence Day celebrations, amid heightened political tensions in Washington following recent shooting incidents near the White House.
Trump and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later alleged that those responsible for the vandalism had ties to the Democratic Party, although no evidence was presented to support the claim.
Following the deployment of National Guard troops to secure the area and the installation of additional security barriers, maintenance crews have been repairing the pool’s base and removing algae using hydrogen peroxide and specialized vacuum equipment.
Meanwhile, lawmakers on Capitol Hill have called for a detailed review of the security lapses that allowed the vandalism to occur.
