Washington, October 11 (ANI) — US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine, claiming that both warring nations have agreed to the truce.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that the ceasefire was effective immediately and urged both Moscow and Kyiv not to violate it.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote, without providing further details about the truce.
Neither Russia nor Ukraine has confirmed the announced ceasefire.
Trump’s latest attempt to broker peace between the two European nations comes a day after he finalized a diesel deal with Russia and suggested that Ukraine should elect a “new President” capable of negotiating an agreement to end the conflict with Moscow.
Following a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, amid renewed tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the US decision to ease restrictions on Russian diesel exports, Trump asserted that Putin was eager to reach a settlement to end the war in Ukraine.
Addressing reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Trump claimed that Moscow was keen to secure an agreement, although he questioned Kyiv’s willingness to compromise.
“I think that Russia would like to make a deal, and we’ve had it back and forth. But Russia would like to make a deal,” Trump said.
He also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for repeatedly missing opportunities to pursue peace negotiations.
“But as I said, this is something that could have been solved many times, but for whatever reason, Zelenskyy does not want to make a deal,” he added.
Trump’s remarks followed his announcement that Russia would supply diesel to the United States and international markets to help mitigate fuel shortages and rising costs associated with the ongoing war in Iran.
The move prompted warnings from Zelenskyy, who argued that allowing Moscow to generate additional revenue from energy sales would strengthen its military campaign.
The dispute has further complicated Washington’s diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump also renewed his criticism of Zelenskyy for not holding presidential elections during the ongoing conflict.
“I think he should have an election, and he could have settled this thing many times,” Trump said.
He maintained that Ukraine would have been in a stronger position during peace negotiations if its administration had reached an agreement two years earlier. Citing Russia’s numerical advantage in military strength, Trump argued that Kyiv should reconsider its diplomatic strategy.
However, Trump’s assessment of Putin’s intentions remains his own, as the recent discussions between the two leaders have not produced a formal agreement to halt the fighting.
The Kremlin has also indicated that an immediate resumption of peace negotiations remains uncertain. According to a summary of Friday’s telephone conversation provided by Russian presidential foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, Putin made no commitment to restart talks with Ukraine. (ANI)
