WASHINGTON, July 16 (ANI): US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday announced the launch of the first-ever Economic Diplomacy Action Group (EDAG), saying the initiative would leverage the full strength of the US government to support American companies, create jobs for American workers, and attract investment into the United States.
Sharing photos from the meeting in a post on X, Rubio said the initiative reflects President Donald Trump’s efforts to strengthen the US economy across multiple sectors.
“Proud to lead the first-ever meeting of the Economic Diplomacy Action Group today. Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re bringing the full strength of the U.S. government to the table to support American companies, create jobs for American workers, and attract investment into the United States,” Rubio wrote.
According to The Hill, the EDAG’s inaugural meeting took place two years after the group was established during the Biden administration.
The committee, composed of leaders from multiple federal agencies, will “shape the contours and focus of U.S. economic statecraft to advance U.S. foreign policy priorities,” including strengthening “American leadership in AI,” a State Department official told The Hill.
The publication also noted that Rubio co-sponsored legislation in Congress in 2019 that laid the groundwork for what later became the EDAG, citing the State Department’s website.
The Championing American Business Through Diplomacy Act of 2019 was enacted to “bolster U.S. commercial competitiveness by strengthening U.S. government support of U.S. private sector interests internationally.”
Rubio’s leadership of the EDAG meeting is part of several high-profile responsibilities he has assumed during the second Trump administration.
According to The Hill, Rubio also became acting national security adviser, making him the first US secretary of state to simultaneously hold both positions since Henry Kissinger in 1973.
The publication also noted that Trump appointed Rubio as acting administrator of the US Agency for International Development before the agency became inoperable in 2025. Trump also named Rubio acting archivist of the National Archives and Records Administration following the dismissal of the previous archivist. Rubio no longer serves in that role as of February.
