Chisinau [Moldova], July 20 (ANI): President Droupadi Murmu on Monday was received by Moldovan President Maia Sandu at the Presidential Palace in Chisinau and was accorded a ceremonial welcome and guard of honor upon her arrival.
Rashtrapati Bhavan said the two leaders held productive and forward-looking discussions covering the full spectrum of bilateral relations.
President Murmu said her state visit, the first ever by an Indian president to the Republic of Moldova, marks a historic milestone and reflects the growing friendship and mutual trust between the two countries.
In a post on X, Rashtrapati Bhavan said, “President Droupadi Murmu was warmly received by President Maia Sandu of Moldova at the Presidential Palace in Chisinau and accorded a ceremonial welcome and guard of honour.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said President Murmu held bilateral talks with her Moldovan counterpart.
Reflecting on the discussions, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote, “President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn held productive bilateral talks with President Maia Sandu of Moldova at the Presidential Palace in Chisinau. The two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India-Moldova cooperation and discussed ways to further deepen collaboration. The discussions reaffirmed the shared commitment to unlock new opportunities and expand bilateral ties.”
President Murmu arrived in Moldova earlier in the day to begin her three-nation European tour, marking the first visit by an Indian head of state to the Eastern European nation.
The high-level diplomatic visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation with Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania across key sectors, including trade, digital technology, and tourism.
During her engagements in Moldova, President Murmu is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with President Maia Sandu and meet Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu.
She will also interact with the Moldova-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, deliver a keynote address at a business forum, and meet members of the Indian diaspora.
“On her arrival at Chisinau International Airport, she was warmly received by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Mihai Popsoi,” Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a post on X.
Moldova is home to about 2,000 Indian citizens, including approximately 1,800 medical students, making the Indian community one of the country’s largest international student populations.
Following her one-day visit to Moldova, President Murmu will travel to North Macedonia for a two-day visit from July 21 to 22, marking another first by an Indian president.
She will then visit Romania from July 23 to 25 at the invitation of Romanian President Nicusor Dan.
The visit to Romania will be the first by an Indian head of state to Bucharest in more than three decades.
The three-nation tour underscores New Delhi’s efforts to deepen bilateral ties and expand its strategic engagement across Eastern Europe. (ANI)
