Glasgow, Scotland, July 24 (ANI): King Charles III officially declared the 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games open at The Hydro in Glasgow, as he attended the opening ceremony alongside Queen Camilla.
According to the official website of Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026, the ceremony began with a curved LED screen showcasing iconic Scottish landmarks and symbols, including Loch Ness, the Kelpies and Edinburgh Castle.
Scotland is hosting the Commonwealth Games for the fourth time. The 11-day sporting event will feature more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories competing across 10 sports and six Para sports.
The Royal Family described the opening ceremony as an “incredible evening” in Glasgow in a post on X, highlighting the participation of athletes from across the Commonwealth.
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also shared visuals of the Indian team participating in the Games. On the sidelines of the Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ Meeting in Glasgow, Mandaviya held a productive meeting with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
Mandaviya highlighted India’s sports initiatives, including the Khelo Bharat Niti and ASMITA Leagues, saying they are strengthening grassroots sports, promoting gender inclusion and creating pathways for sporting excellence across the country.
The discussions also focused on leveraging the Commonwealth platform to deepen sports partnerships and explore new opportunities in trade and investment as India prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Team India’s official handle shared visuals of the athletes as the Indian contingent began its campaign in Glasgow.
India has sent a 124-member contingent to the 2026 Commonwealth Games, competing across eight able-bodied sports and five Para sports. The Games are being held from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, with India aiming to add to its rich legacy at the multi-sport event. (ANI)
