VICTORIA, Seychelles, June 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended the National Day celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence, becoming the first Indian prime minister to be invited as Guest of Honour at the event.
The Ministry of External Affairs said Modi’s participation marked a significant milestone in India-Seychelles relations, underscoring the close and longstanding partnership between the two nations.
In a post on X, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Modi attended the celebrations as Guest of Honour, with an Indian marching contingent comprising personnel from the Army and Navy taking part in the parade. An Indian Naval band also formed part of the contingent, highlighting the close defense and cultural ties between the two countries.
He further noted that Indian naval ships INS Tarkash and INS Ikshak were docked at Port Victoria as part of the celebrations, symbolizing India’s enduring maritime partnership with Seychelles.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie held official talks during Modi’s state visit. The discussions covered the full range of bilateral relations, with both leaders agreeing to strengthen cooperation in areas including health, education, capacity building, digital transformation, sustainable development, social infrastructure, renewable energy, maritime security, and defence.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues, including challenges in the Indian Ocean region such as illegal fishing, drug trafficking, and piracy.
Both sides expressed satisfaction over the progress made in implementing projects under the Special Economic Package announced by India. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Seychelles’ development priorities and further deepening the longstanding bilateral partnership. (ANI)
