Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Aug. 5 (ANI): Preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Gujarat have formally begun with the arrival of the Commonwealth Games Flag from Glasgow, marking a significant milestone in India’s build-up to hosting the event, according to an official release.
Following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the flag was handed over to Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, representing the host state for the 2030 Games.
India finished fourth in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games medal standings with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. Indian para athletes also delivered the country’s best-ever para athletics performance at the Commonwealth Games, winning three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals and ending a 20-year wait for a podium finish in para athletics.
Sanghavi formally presented the Commonwealth Games Flag to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during a state Cabinet meeting.
The ceremony was attended by Gujarat para athletes Rakesh Bhatt and Rohit Majgul, who represented India at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Para table tennis player Sonal Patel also participated in the event.
The Commonwealth Games Flag will remain in Gujarat until the opening of the 2030 Games. According to the release, it is expected to inspire athletes while supporting preparations for the event and promoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India initiative.
The Council of Ministers welcomed the flag as Sanghavi formally presented it to the chief minister.
Under Commonwealth Games tradition, the host city transfers the Commonwealth Games Flag to the next host during the closing ceremony. The handover symbolizes the official transfer of responsibility for organizing the Games and reflects the event’s legacy of unity, friendship, cooperation, and sportsmanship among Commonwealth nations.
Receiving the flag also marks the official start of preparations by the next host, with the flag serving as a symbol of fairness, excellence, mutual respect, and global brotherhood.
According to the release, the Commonwealth Games Flag represents unity, friendship, equality, and the spirit of sportsmanship among Commonwealth nations. Its arrival in the host region symbolizes the beginning of preparations and builds anticipation for the Games.
The flag also carries the message, “Sport Unites Us All,” reflecting the values of peace, cooperation, and friendship across the Commonwealth. (ANI)
