New Delhi, Aug. 5 (ANI): The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 32 fake universities across India in its latest list published in February 2026, and the central government has directed states and Union territories to take legal action against the institutions, the Rajya Sabha was informed Wednesday.
Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar provided the information in a written reply to the Upper House.
According to the Ministry of Education, the list of fake universities is available on the UGC’s official website.
The UGC has taken several measures against self-styled or fake universities, including issuing clarification letters, compliance notices, show-cause notices, and warning notices to the institutions.
The commission has also published public notices on its website warning students and the public against enrolling in or dealing with such institutions.
In addition, the UGC has written to the chief secretaries, education secretaries, and principal secretaries of the concerned states and Union territories, urging them to take appropriate action against the fake institutions and register First Information Reports (FIRs) against those operating in violation of the UGC Act, 1956.
The central government has further requested all state governments and Union territory administrations to initiate legal proceedings to shut down these institutions and take action against those accused of defrauding students by falsely presenting themselves as universities, awarding unauthorized degrees, and using the word “University” in their names.
States and Union territories have also been asked to inform the central government and the UGC about any additional fake universities operating within their jurisdictions that are not included in the commission’s current list. (ANI)
