Florida [US], July 20 (ANI): The US military has completed its ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iranian targets, marking a sustained escalation in the region.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operations targeted “Iranian military command centres, air defence and coastal surveillance sites, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites, and communications networks.”
The offensive concluded at 10 p.m. ET on July 19 (2:00 a.m. GMT on July 20) and was carried out “to further diminish Iran’s ability to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.”
“The US military is holding Iran accountable at the Commander in Chief’s direction,” the official statement said.
Signaling continued high alert in the region, the statement added that “CENTCOM forces remain highly vigilant, focused, lethal, and ready.”
The latest wave of airstrikes comes as regional tensions move closer to full-scale conflict following the collapse of last month’s interim ceasefire agreement, which has significantly disrupted maritime traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The military escalation intensified after Washington confirmed the death of another American service member on Sunday, prompting additional retaliatory strikes.
Meanwhile, Tehran launched missile salvos toward Jordan, further raising concerns about a broader regional conflict that could affect neighboring Israel.
Independent activists in Iran reported major explosions at approximately 2:30 a.m. local time during the latest round of operations.
“The strikes will continue degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” Central Command said.
Providing additional details on the rising casualties, US military officials said the latest fatality occurred in Iraq on Saturday during the controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone.
The announcement followed an earlier Pentagon statement that its campaign targeted Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in retaliation for the killing of US troops in Jordan on Friday.
A subsequent search for a missing service member from Friday’s attack led to the discovery of unidentified remains on Sunday, which are currently undergoing forensic examination.
The latest developments bring the total number of US military fatalities since the outbreak of hostilities to 17.
The cross-border conflict, now entering its second week, has seen US forces systematically target key Iranian infrastructure, including bridges, water desalination plants, and electrical grids.
In response, Tehran has expanded its military operations by targeting US-allied nations across the Middle East.
Air defense systems were recently activated in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain to intercept incoming Iranian drones and missiles, while Israeli authorities warned that missile trajectories toward Jordan could cause the conflict to spill into Israeli territory for the first time in several weeks. (ANI)
