Dhaka [Bangladesh], July 9 (ANI): Continuous torrential rains have triggered devastating landslides in Bangladesh, claiming the lives of five more people, including a child and two married couples.
The incidents occurred in separate landslides late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning in Mission Para in the Aziznagar Union of Lama Upazila in the hilly Bandarban district.
With the latest deaths, the toll from landslides in the hilly regions of southern Bangladesh has risen to 27 over the past four days amid heavy monsoon rains and flooding.
According to local authorities and the Fire Service, the first landslide struck Mission Para at around 3 a.m. Thursday. Three members of the same family were buried under mud and debris. The victims were identified as Md. Yunus, 28; his wife, Ranu Akhter, 22; and their four-year-old son, Md. Soleman.
The incident came to light around 4 a.m., after which local residents and Fire Service personnel launched a rescue operation to recover the bodies.
About 90 minutes later, at around 5:30 a.m., a second landslide struck the same area. The collapsing hillside crushed the wall of a single-story brick house, trapping Md. Jewel, 34, and his wife, Kulsuma Akhter, 25, beneath the debris. Both died at the scene.
Originally from Rampura in Chittagong’s Halishahar area, the couple had been living in Mission Para as tenants.
Mobarak Hossain Mohoram, chairman of the Aziznagar Union Parishad, confirmed the tragedy, saying he rushed to the scene after receiving the news at around 4 a.m. and coordinated recovery efforts with the Fire Service and local residents.
Lama Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kayzar Hamid confirmed that three members of one family and two members of another were killed. He said the bodies were handed over to their families after the completion of the inquest.
Expressing grief over the incident, Lama Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Moin Uddin said, “The loss of five lives in these landslides is incredibly tragic. To prevent such disasters and protect lives, the administration is continuously conducting loudspeaker campaigns, urging everyone living in vulnerable foothill areas to relocate to safer ground.” (ANI)
