Washington, D.C. [US], July 5 (ANI): President Donald Trump on Sunday sharply criticized Democratic leadership in Illinois, contrasting the number of deaths from shooting incidents in Chicago with U.S. military casualties during the conflict with Iran.
According to data cited from the Chicago Police Department, 137 people died in shooting incidents in March, 97 in February, and 858 people were victims of shooting incidents through June this year. By comparison, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that 13 U.S. service members died during the Iran conflict.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that “over 273 Americans have been shot since the war in Iran began… in Chicago.”
The comments come amid an ongoing political dispute between Trump and Illinois leaders. The president again questioned the effectiveness of local leadership, including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, arguing that they have failed to maintain public safety.
Trump has repeatedly used Truth Social to call for federal intervention in Chicago, asserting that he could make the city safe “in one month” if given the opportunity.
Earlier in June, Trump renewed calls for federal military involvement in Chicago following a series of shootings across the city.
“At least 39 people injured, 4 dead, in Chicago weekend shootings,” Trump wrote on Truth Social while addressing Pritzker. “Governor Pritzker, I, as President, can fix this, FAST and permanently. D.C., Memphis, New Orleans, all down to record lows, and quickly! CALL ME!”
In a previous post, Trump questioned why the governor had not contacted him, stating, “I could make Chicago a safe city in ONE MONTH. In ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!!”
Pritzker dismissed the president’s comments, criticizing Trump and questioning his ability to address public safety issues.
“I don’t think that we should be listening to this President about promises that he makes or that he has any idea how to protect us in the state of Illinois,” Pritzker said. (ANI)
