Tehran, Iran, September 6, 2026 — At least 11 people were killed and seven others injured after a fuel tanker exploded during a traffic collision in western Iran on Saturday, according to state-run broadcaster IRIB.
The incident occurred on an intercity route linking Sanandaj County in Kurdistan province with Hamedan County in Hamedan province. Babak Hodaei, head of emergency medical services at Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences, said the blast ignited several nearby vehicles.
Emergency responders transported the injured to a medical facility in Sanandaj, according to Xinhua News Agency, while rescue efforts at the scene remained underway.
The incident follows an event earlier in July in which an oil tanker exploded in the Strait of Hormuz after striking a naval mine, local media reported.
The ship struck the explosive device after reportedly drifting away from routes established by Tehran. According to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency, the vessel strayed from designated channels and entered an area restricted for safe maritime transit, despite previous warnings.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and serves as a vital energy corridor through which oil and liquefied natural gas from major Gulf producers are transported to global markets.
Separately, amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, U.S. military personnel targeted three Iranian crude oil tankers. The action followed a strike in which the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles at two U.S. Navy warships, the U.S. military said Saturday.
U.S. Central Command reported that an American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer evaded multiple hostile incoming attacks without any U.S. personnel being injured.
“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers, Sept. 5, after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles towards two U.S. Navy warships patrolling regional waters,” CENTCOM said. (ANI)
