Washington [US], November 04 (ANI): Claiming victory in the 2020 presidential elections, United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday (local time) thanked the American people for their tremendous support and said the results of polls have been “phenomenal”.
“I thank the American people for their tremendous support. A very sad group of people is trying to disenfranchise that group of people and we will not stand for it… The results tonight have been phenomenal… We were getting ready to win this election. Frankly, we did win this elections,” he said while addressing a crowd, from the White House.
Voting has closed in the US and all eyes are on the vote count to decide the race for the White House between incumbent President Trump and his rival, veteran Democrat Joe Biden.
Democratic presidential nominee Biden has garnered a lead of 220 electoral votes against Trump’s 213 votes in the US presidential polls, according to current projections by CNN on Tuesday.
To win the presidency, either Trump or Biden must acquire over 50 per cent of the electoral college vote, which is 538 in total. Therefore, each candidate must get a minimum of 270 electoral votes to clinch the presidency.
Biden is projected to win Washington, Oregon, California, Illinois, New Hampshire and New Mexico.
California has one of the biggest shares in the Electoral College, with 55 votes, while Illinois also has a significant contribution with 20.
Biden is also projected to win Colorado, Connecticut, Vermont, Delaware, Washington, DC, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.
According to the projections, Trump is expected to win Wyoming, Missouri, Utah, and Kansas.
Uncertainty continues as results yet to be announced
US Election Day has ended but counting is still on and uncertainty prevails about the results.
According to a report by The New York Times, as of 6 am Wednesday, eight states that will decide the next president remained uncalled, as did a handful of Senate races that will determine who controls the chamber.
The eight states are Alaska (3 electoral votes), Arizona (11), Georgia (16), Michigan (16), Nevada (6), North Carolina (15), Pennsylvania (20), Wisconsin (10) and Maine’s Second Congressional District (1).
The US presidential election has turned into a nail-biting battle as Democratic candidate Joe Biden is ahead of US President Donald Trump in Electoral College votes, having 227 votes to the Republican incumbent’s 213.
While Biden needs 43 votes more to clinch the White House, President Trump needs to secure 57 more to win a second term as Commander-in-Chief.
Six Senate races were uncalled in five states: Alaska, Georgia, Maine, Michigan and North Carolina, NYT reported.
Some 239 million people were eligible to vote this year. The mail-in ballots could take days to be counted, which would delay declaration of results.
Biden campaign slams Trump’s claim of victory as ‘outrageous, unprecedented, and incorrect’
Former US Vice President Joe Biden‘s campaign slammed President Donald Trump‘s claim of victory prematurely as “outrageous, unprecedented and incorrect”.
Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillion issued a statement after Trump’s remarks at the White House where he said that he would go to the Supreme Court to put the counting of ballots to a halt after election day.
“The counting will not stop. It will continue until every duly cast vote is counted. Because that is what our laws — the laws that protect every Americans’ constitutional right to vote — require,” O’Malley Dillon said in a statement, as quoted by The Hill and added that there was “a naked effort to take away the democratic rights of American citizens.”
She further said that the Biden campaign is prepared to battle Trump in court if he goes through to try and stop the tabulation of votes.
“We repeat what the Vice President said tonight: Donald Trump does not decide the outcome of this election. Joe Biden does not decide the outcome of this election,” O’Malley Dillon said and added, “The American people decide the outcome of this election. And the democratic process must and will continue until its conclusion.”
Addressing his supporters from the East Room in the White House, Trump said, “We want voting to stop.” “We’ll be going to the US Supreme Court. We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at 4 in the morning and add them to the list… as far as I’m concerned, we’ve already won,” said Trump. (ANI)
