Trump acquitted again in impeachment trial

Washington [US], February 14 (ANI): Former US President Donald Trump has been acquitted in his second impeachment trial as the Senate fell short of supporters for convicting him of inciting Capitol riots.
His acquittal comes over a month after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol as legislators were counting the electoral results that certified his loss. Five people died in the riot, including a police officer.
According to a report by CNN, Trump got acquitted even after seven Republican senators joining 50 Democrats voting to convict, fewer than the 17 needed.
The vote was 57-43, with seven Republicans and the Senators needed a two-thirds majority to convict Trump.
Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer termed the Senate‘s decision as “un-American”.

“The former President inspired, directed, and propelled a mob to violently prevent the peaceful transfer of power, subvert the will of the people, and illegally keep that President in power,” Schumer said.
“There is nothing, nothing more un-American than that…There is nothing, nothing more antithetical to our democracy… insulting to the generations of American patriots who gave their lives to defend our form of government,” he added.
Following the Senate vote to acquit him, Trump thanked his legal team and said he will always have, and always will and be a champion for the unwavering rule of law.
“It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree.”
“I always have, and always will, be a champion for the unwavering rule of law, the heroes of law enforcement, and the right of Americans to peacefully and honorably debate the issues of the day without malice and without hate,” he further said.
Trump also thanked his legal team and “all of the United States Senators and Members of Congress who stood proudly for the Constitution we all revere and for the sacred legal principles at the heart of our country,” in the statement, CNN reported.

After acquittal, Trump calls 2nd impeachment trial ‘greatest witch hunt’ in US history

After being acquitted for the second time in the impeachment trial, former US President Donald Trump on Saturday (local time) called the trial yet another phase of the “greatest witch hunt” in the history of the United States.
In an official statement, Trump said, “Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.”

Calling the trial the “greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country”, the former President said, “No president has ever gone through anything like it, and it continues because our opponents cannot forget the almost 75 million people, the highest number ever for a sitting president, who voted for us just a few short months ago.”
Defending himself as a champion of law and order, Trump did not offer any apologies for his actions that led to the Capitol riot on January 6.
“It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree,” he further said.
“In the months ahead I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people. There has never been anything like it!” he added.

US Speaker rules out censure after Trump’s acquittal

After the Senate voted to acquit Donald Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Saturday (local time) said that she was against the possibility of censuring the former US President in the Senate as that would be just a “little slap on the wrist”.
“Censure is a slap in the face of the Constitution. It lets everybody off the hook, it lets everybody off the hook,” Pelosi said.
She further said that people are not censured for inciting the Capitol riot but on “people for using stationery for the wrong purpose”.
“Oh, these cowardly senators who could not face up to what the president did and what was at stake for our country are now going to have a chance to give a little slap on the wrist?” she added.
Pelosi added that the House was going to investigate everything regarding the January 6 events at the Capitol, to ensure that such events never happen in the US again, Sputnik reported. (ANI)
