Chengalpattu (Tamil Nadu) [India], December 3 (ANI): Due to the reverberation of Cyclone Michaung, the sea level has increased to about 5 feet in Tamil Nadu‘s Mahabalipuram beach. As a result, fishermen and tourists have been banned from going to the seashore while the Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the Cyclone will move to the northwest coast of Tamil Nadu tomorrow or the next day (5th) and cross the coast between Andhra Pradesh.
Because of this, a warning of very heavy rainfall has been issued for 4 districts namely Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram for today and tomorrow followed by the east coast. In this case, due to the echo of CycloneMichaung, the sea level has increased to a height of about 5 feet in various coastal areas including Mahabalipuram, Venpurusham, Kokkilamedu, Devaneri, New Edaiyur Kuppam, Salavankuppam, Pattipulam Kuppam, Sulerikadu, Perur, Nemmeli, New Kalpakkam.
As a result, the Chengalpattu district administration has banned fishermen and tourists living in the coastal areas of Mamallapuram from going to the sea. Similarly, people should avoid going out unnecessarily during storms. Don’t believe misinformation about Cyclone Michaung. They have advised the public to stay safe until the official announcement that the Cyclone has crossed the coast.
Currently, the surrounding areas including Mamallapuram are experiencing heavy rains, and the daily life of the people of the area has been greatly affected. The weather office further said there are risks to thatched huts, possibilities of damage to vulnerable structures, breaking of tree branches, and uprooting of small and medium-sized trees.
Minor damage to power and communication lines due to the breaking of branches and uprooting of trees, major damage to Kutcha and minor damage to Pucca roads due to heavy rain are expected. (ANI)
Cyclone ‘Michaung’: Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister takes stock of situation in Thiruvallur to avoid power outages
Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) [India], December 3 (ANI): Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Thangam Thennarasu inspected the preparatory works of his department in Thiruvallur to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the heavy rain expected in the district due to cyclone ‘Michaung‘ in the coming days.
The Minister visited the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board‘s Durainallur substation to take stock of the precautionary measures taken by the department.
Thennarasu said that the officials are instructed to take necessary action to avoid a power outage in the coastal areas in the district during the heavy rain expected to be brought by the cyclone.
“Chief Minister MK Stalin has instructed to take precautionary measures so that the power supply would not be affected. The authorities have been instructed to take appropriate precautionary measures so that coastal areas are not affected due to heavy rains and Cyclones in the Tiruvallur district,” Thennarasu said. The minister said that the necessary logistics materials have been kept ready so that there is no power cut. 3,650 electric poles, 450 km of electric cables, 40 transformers and 1,500 field workers are ready in the district, the minister said.
As the state is bracing for the cyclone, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday on Monday. However, all essential services, such as police, fire service, local bodies, milk supply, water supply, hospitals/medical shops, power supply, transport, fuel outlets, hotels/restaurants, and offices engaged in disaster response, relief and rescue activities shall function as usual.
During the cyclone period, parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Odisha are likely to experience rainfall, though with varying intensity.
Cyclone Michaung, brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh with winds that could pack speeds of upto 100 kmph on Tuesday forenoon.
The cyclonic storm is currently over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to continue to move northwestwards, intensify further and reach Westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by Monday forenoon.
Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards almost parallel and close to the south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam during Tuesday forenoon in the form of a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph. Cyclone Michaung: Educational institutions to be closed in AP’s NTR district for two days
NTR district (Andhra Pradesh) [India], December 3 (ANI): Given the Cyclone alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, the district collector announced holidays for all educational institutions in the NTR district on December 4 and 5. The collector’s order further said that the schools might have to compensate for these holidays with the ensuing Second Saturdays, in case of a shortfall of 220 working academic days.
Cyclone ‘Michaung‘ is expected to hit the west-central Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts by December 4 forenoon, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 21 teams for rescue and relief operations, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) informed on Sunday.
The inputs were shared in the second NCMC meeting under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba earlier on Sunday. The meeting was held to review the preparedness of state governments and central ministries and departments for impending cyclone ‘Michaung‘ in the Bay of Bengal.
