Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) [India], November 2 (ANI): Considering new frontiers in technology sector like artificial intelligence, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday emphasised on the need to establish a strong foothold in high-end technologies from the very beginning for India’s development.
Speaking at the 65th Foundation Day of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Rajnath Singh said we have enough scope to improve our capabilities as well as sufficient conditions for this.
He said that there are numerous examples before the world where India has proven its innovation prowess. “Whether it’s our IT industry, satellites, or the launch of 5G networks, there are many achievements. However, we cannot afford to stop here, as many new frontiers are opening up every day.”
“For example, look at Artificial Intelligence. There is a competitive environment surrounding this technology and its applications in various countries around the world. The entire globe is prioritizing this sector and striving to master it.
“In such a competitive global scenario, it is very important for our country to establish a strong foothold in high-end technologies from the very beginning. This way, we can fully realize our potential and ensure their contribution to the nation’s progress. It is evident that institutions like yours (IIT Kanpur) will play a significant role in this direction,” the Defence Minister said.
Rajnath Singh said IIT Kanpur is not an ordinary institution; rather, it is an academic engine in itself. “If IIT Kanpur puts in the effort, it can provide India with the dynamism needed in this competition.”
Talking about the growing role of technology in the defense ecosystem, the Minister pointed towards the current “state of wars and conflicts around the world.”
“You know that we are witnessing new forms of technology in these wars and conflicts. The use of various new technologies, such as drones, laser warfare, cyber warfare, precision-guided missiles, and hypersonic missiles, is increasing. This technology-oriented warfare has made conflicts even more lethal. The situation has reached a point where discussions about space warfare have also begun,” highlighted the Defence Minister.
“Therefore, I believe we need to focus on the defense applications of these modern cutting-edge technologies. Due to some historical reasons, there has been a critical gap in this area, and it is essential for us to fill that gap as soon as possible,” Rajnath Singh focussed at the Foundation Day of IIT Kanpur.
The Foundation Day of IIT Kanpur is celebrated on November 2 to mark the significant milestone in the institute’s journey since its establishment in 1959. IIT Kanpur was one of the first IITs to be set up in India, aimed at developing world-class engineers and scientists.
Over the years, IIT Kanpur has emerged as a premier institution known for its cutting-edge research, innovative teaching methods, and strong emphasis on entrepreneurship. It has played a vital role in advancing technology and science in India, contributing significantly to various fields including engineering, management, and the humanities.
The foundation day is an occasion to reflect on the institute’s achievements, honor its alumni who have made significant contributions across various sectors, and to celebrate its ongoing commitment to excellence in education and research. The event typically includes lectures, discussions, and cultural programs, bringing together faculty, students, and alumni to foster a sense of community and collaboration. (ANI)
