Chandigarh (Punjab), Aug 4 (ANI): The Punjab Police on Monday apprehended twelve more persons, including two businessmen in connection with the spurious liquor case.
The police have launched a manhunt for a Ludhiana-based paint business owner who had initially supplied three drums of spurious liquor that had caused several deaths in the state.
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has directed Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta to put the full might of the police force in tracking and apprehending every single person involved in the case and move swiftly to ensure stringent action against each of them.
The magisterial inquiry ordered by the Chief Minister is also probing the involvement of all suspects, as well as the 6 police and 7 Excise and Taxation Officers whose suspension was ordered by the Chief Minister on Saturday.
With the latest arrests, the total number of arrests in the case has gone up to 37, including five kingpins of the illicit liquor mafia that spanned several districts of the state. A manhunt has been launched for 8 more identified accused, including the Ludhiana-based paint shop owner, Rajesh Joshi, who is believed to be a key player in the mafia chain, said DGP Dinkar Gupta.
Investigations are also in progress to identify other links, Gupta said adding that efforts are also in progress to identify the various supply routes across districts since there were multiple buyers of the Ludhiana-based businessman, who was still absconding. The DGP said raids were still continuing. The death toll in the case has meanwhile gone up to 111, with 82 deaths in Tarn Taran and 13 each in Amritsar and Batala.
Among the arrests made in the past 24 hours is Ravinder Singh Anand of Moga. Ravinder, who runs a factory manufacturing mechanical jacks, had bought 3 cans of 200 litres each of the spurious liquor at Rs 11,000 a drum from the Ludhiana businessman. He had recently started manufacturing hand sanitisers.
According to the police, Ravinder sold one of the three drums to Avtar Singh, also of Moga, who sold it to Harjit Singh and his 2 sons, residents of village Pandori Gola in Tarn Taran, for Rs 28,000 a drum. Harjit and his sons paid Rs 50,000, with the balance still pending and hid the drums in bushes near their village.
Further investigations have revealed that Harjit and his sons (Satnam and Shamsher) gave 42 bottles worth of spurious spirit from the drums to Gobinder Singh, for Rs 6,000. Each of these bottles was diluted by him by 10 per cent to make 46 bottles, which he sold to the sons of Balwinder Kaur on July 28 and 29 in two installments of 23 bottles each. Balwinder, the first person to be arrested in the case, had further diluted the alcohol by adding 50 per cent water and sold a bottle of the diluted spirit for Rs 100.
Meanwhile, Ravinder Singh has further revealed that he was an associate of a Moga based paint store owner named Ashwini Bajaj, who has been arrested. Ravinder’s questioning disclosed the involvement of Rajesh Joshi, who is evading arrest, the police added.
The DGP said initial investigations indicate that Gobinder, Ravinder, Darshana Rani, Triveni Chowhan and Harpreet Singh were among the key accused in the case, and their links with other major mafia gang members were being ascertained.
On Sunday, the Ludhiana police busted an illicit liquor manufacturing racket and recovered more than 2 lakh litres of lahan (fruit of mahua tree used in making liquor), 1,612 litres of illicit liquor and 4,606 litres of English wine between May 18 and August 1.

Terming the hooch tragedy as amounting to murder, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said that he will not spare anyone involved in the matter.
“Some people have sold this inferior alcohol due to which 111 people have died. They think that they would do anything and will escape and earn money, but it will not happen. I have ordered police and excise departments to nab all those responsible, irrespective of their affiliations and positions. I want this to be done within two days. We will take stringent action against them,” Singh said.
He said that no one will be spared whether they hold top position or have links in the government. Guilty will be punished to ensure justice, he said.
In a video message from the Chief Minister’ Office, Singh said, “These deaths amount to murder and people who have sold this alcohol knowing that people may die after drinking it will not be spared whether they are biggies of the state or have links in government departments.”
“I am saddened by these deaths. All of them are our people. On the one had we are struggling with corona and on the other hand this tragedy. “I would say that corona is out of our hands as it has spread to all the countries. We are doing what we can to control the spread. But I will end the liquor mafia involved in this crime,” he said.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar said that deaths due to illicit liquor in Punjab are upsetting.
“Close to 110 deaths due to illicit liquor in Punjab are very upsetting. I sympathise with families of victims and assure them that no stone will be left unturned by the state government in punishing the culprits,” Jakhar said.
Jakhar has written to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi about the matter. “I have written to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi that such incidents should not be repeated and suitable action should be taken against them (Rajya Sabha MPs Pratap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo). Such behaviour shouldn’t be tolerated,” he said.
“I believe Congress party cannot afford to have such members who are trying to bite the hand which is feeding them. They have crossed ‘Laxman Rekha’ (line of self-restraint) by going to the governor and seeking CBI and ED probe against their own government,” said Jakhar. (ANI)
