New Delhi [India], September 27 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday mourned the demise of former Union Minister Jaswant Singh.
The Prime Minister remembered the role played by Singh, which included his stints as the External Affairs and Finance Minister during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
“Jaswant Singh Ji served our nation diligently, first as a soldier and later during his long association with politics. During Atal Ji’s Government, he handled crucial portfolios and left a strong mark in the worlds of finance, defence and external affairs. Saddened by his demise,” PM Modi’s tweet read.
“Jaswant Singh Ji will be remembered for his unique perspective on matters of politics and society. He also contributed to the strengthening of the BJP. I will always remember our interactions. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” he added in a second tweet.
The Prime Minister also said he has spoken to Jaswant Singh‘s son and Congress leader Manvendra Singh and expressed condolences on the unfortunate demise of the leader.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh too paid tributes to the departed leader and remembered his service to the nation and the BJP.
“Shri Jaswant Singh ji would be remembered for his intellectual capabilities and stellar record in service to the nation. He also played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Rajasthan. Condolences to his family and supporters in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” Rajnath Singh‘s tweet read.
A veteran BJP leader, Jaswant Singh, had first served in the Indian Army before joining politics. He served as a member of both the Houses of the Parliament and held several important positions in the NDA Cabinet. (ANI)

Birla remembered Singh’s contributions to the nation both as an Army officer in his earlier years and as a politician.
“I mourn the demise of former union ministerJaswant Singh. He served the country excellently both as an Army officer and as a skilled politician. During both these stints, his thinking brought the country out from difficult situations. My condolences to the bereaved family,” Birla’s tweet read.
Sonia, Manmohan write to Manvendra Singh expressing grief over his father Jaswant Singh’s demise
Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday penned letters to former MP Manvendra Singh expressing grief over the demise of his father and former Union Minister Jaswant Singh.
“I was saddened to learn of the passing away of your revered and beloved father. Jaswant Singh was a man who lived his life with the utmost honour and integrity, whether as an army officer, a politician or a cabinet minister who held the most crucial portfolios of external affairs, defence and finance. In all these, he was driven by a deep patriotism, love for his country and love and care for the people he served, and for the principles he believed in,” Gandhi stated in the letter.
“How cruel and painful his last years were, not just for him, who so valued his independence, who so enjoyed all the beauty that life has to offer from music and books and nature to close ties with family and friends, but also for you and your whole family who cared for him with the utmost love and devotion,” she stated.
Gandhi said, “Jaswant Singh took great pride and joy in your own political career, conducted with an unequivocal dedication to your constituency and to the principles of democracy, social justice and our plural culture.”
“You and your family must draw solace from that at this time of grief. Jaswant Singhji’s passing leaves a void in our national and public life that cannot be filled. I mourn the loss of a noble human being and a most dedicated and distinguished public servant,” she said.
Calling Jaswant an able administrator and outstanding parliamentarian, the former PM said that the country has lost a great leader who always worked for the betterment of society.
The former union minister passed away today morning, due to a cardiac arrest, at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral), Delhi. According to the hospital, Singh’s COVID-19 status was negative.
“He was admitted on June 25, 2020, and was treated for Sepsis with Multiorgan Dysfunction Syndrome and effects of Severe Head Injury old (Optd). He had a Cardiac arrest this morning,” the hospital said.
Chidambaram, Kumaraswamy condole Jaswant Singh’s demise
Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday conveyed his condolences to the family after the demise of former union minister Jaswant Singh while terming him as a “gracious gentleman”.
The Congress leader said that Singh had “paid a heavy price” for not being connected to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during his stint with the BJP.
“Saddened by the passing away of Jaswant Singh, a gracious gentleman. Although he was a minister in BJP governments, he did not come from the ranks of the RSS and paid a price of being ignored after Vajpayeeji passed away. Jaswant Singh was not an economist but was willing to listen to sound economic advice. My sincere condolences to Manvendra Singh and other members of the family,” Chidambaram’s tweet read.
Meanwhile, Janata Dal (Secular) leader and former Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy also paid tributes to the former union minister.
“Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of former Union Minister and veteran politician Shri Jaswant Singh. I express my sincere condolences to his family,” Kumaraswamy’s tweet read.
Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari also expressed grief at Singh’s demise.
“The news of the demise of former Union Minister Shri Jaswant Singh is deeply saddening. Fiercely patriotic, articulate and eloquent, Jaswant Singh made his mark as India’s Defence Minister, Minister of External Affairs and Finance Minister in the government led by late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His learned speeches and interventions within Parliament and outside were awaited and appreciated by one and all,” Koshyari said through a statement.
He added that with the passing away of Singh “India has lost a world class diplomat and statesman.” (ANI)
