Geneva [Switzerland], July 12 (Sputnik/ANI): The global COVID-19 cases has risen above 12.3 million after 219,983 new positive tests were reported worldwide over the past 24 hours, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Saturday.
The latest rise to the case total is slightly below the 228,102 new positive tests confirmed by the WHO in its daily statistical bulletin on Friday.
According to the organization, 132,683 new positive tests were reported in the United States and a further 69,184 new cases were also confirmed in Brazil.
The global coronavirus disease death toll rose by 5,286 over the preceding 24 hours to 556,335, the WHO said. The corresponding rise to the death toll on Friday was 5,565.

Over 39,000 new COVID19 cases confirmed in Brazil over 24-hours
Brasilia [Brazil], July 12 (Sputnik/ANI): The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Brazil increased by more than 39,000 in the past 24 hours, and over 1,000 new deaths were reported in that period, the country’s Health Ministry informed.
There are now a total of 1,839,850 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil. In the past 24 hours, 39,023 new cases and 1,071 new deaths from COVID-19 were confirmed, according to Saturday health ministry data. Brazil‘s total coronavirus death toll stands at 71,469.
On Friday, Brazil registered over 45,000 new coronavirus cases and more than 1,200 new deaths from COVID-19. Over 1.1 million people have recovered from COVID-19 in Brazil since the start of the epidemic in the country, according to the health ministry.
Brazil has the second-highest coronavirus death toll, it is surpassed only by the United States, which has registered over 134,700 COVID-19 fatalities, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. Brazil and the United States are also the top two countries in terms of the total number of registered coronavirus cases (the United States has the highest total of over 3.2 million COVID-19 cases). UK reports 148 coronavirus related deaths, toll rises to 44,798
London [UK], July 12 (Sputnik/ANI): The UK has reported 148 new coronavirus disease-related deaths over the preceding 24 hours, three times more than the corresponding rise reported on the previous day, the country’s Department of Health and Social Care said on Saturday.
This latest rise sees the UK‘s COVID-19 death toll, as reported by the department, rise to 44,798. On Friday, just 48 new deaths were confirmed by public health officials.
The Department of Health and Social Care also confirmed on Saturday that 820 new positive tests for the disease had been confirmed over the past 24 hours, a significant rise from the 512 new cases reported on Friday.
The UK‘s COVID-19 case total now stands at 288,953, the department stated.
The latest surge in cases and deaths takes place exactly one week after the government permitted pubs, cafes, bars, hotels, and hairdressers to reopen in England, as part of efforts to bring economic relief to the country’s hospitality and service sectors.(Sputnik/ANI)
US sees record single-day spike of 66,600 COVID-19 cases: Johns Hopkins University
Washington [US], July 11 (Sputnik/ANI): The United States has seen another record spike in daily coronavirus cases with more than 66,600 infections reported in the past 24 hours, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University shows.
The country has registered 66,627 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours. The previous record of over 63,200 cases was reported the day before.
Another 802 patients have died over the given period, which is less than 990 the day before.
In total, the US has 3.1 million cumulative cases. Over 983,000 people have recovered, and more than 134,000 have died. (Sputnik/ANI)
No new COVID-19 cases reported in Vietnam
Hanoi [Vietnam], July 12 (VNA/ANI): Vietnam did not record any new cases of coronavirus infection on Saturday afternoon, keeping the tally at 370, the national steering committee for COVID-19 prevention and control said.
Among all cases, 230 are imported and quarantined upon their arrival in the country.
Meanwhile, 350 patients or 94.6 per cent have recovered from the disease, and there are no related deaths.
Three of the 20 remainders have tested negative for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, once and two others at least twice.
There are 9,988 people having close contact with confirmed cases or coming from pandemic-hit areas under quarantine at present, including six in hospitals, 9,509 at other concentrated quarantine sites, and 413 at home or accommodation facilities.
On July 11 morning, Patient 91, a 43-year-old British pilot and also the most severe case so far in the country, was discharged from hospital after 115 days undergoing treatment.
He left the Ho Chi Minh City-based Cho Ray Hospital for Hanoi in the afternoon and is set to return to the UK on a flight of Vietnam Airlines at 11pm the same day. (VNA/ANI)
Up to 70 pc of Afghan lawmakers test positive for COVID-19: Reports
Kabul [Afghanistan], July 11 (Sputnik/ANI): Between 60 and 70 percent of lawmakers in Afghanistan have tested positive for the coronavirus disease since the start of the outbreak, the country’s 1News broadcaster reports on Saturday, citing a member of parliament.
According to Simin Barekzai, a member of parliament representing Herat province, most of the politicians who have caught the disease have recovered but some remain in quarantine.
“I hope that those who are under self-quarantine recover and complete the parliament’s strength,” Barekzai was quoted by the broadcaster as saying.
A private hospital in Kabul told the broadcaster that several lawmakers had visited the facility to get tested for COVID-19, and that some of these tests returned a positive result.
Since the start of the outbreak, 34,366 cases of COVID-19 have been registered in Afghanistan, and the country’s death toll stands at 994. Over the past day, 172 new positive tests for the disease were confirmed. (Sputnik/ANI)
