Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 22 (ANI): To tackle the problem of depleting groundwater level, 42 Panchayats of Rajnandgaon came up with a unique initiative and made 2.25 lakh pits to store water during the rainy season.
The project has cost Rs 1.16 crores and has been made on 111 hills.
Around 1.5 lakh villagers worked on this project continuously for 2 months.
Zila Panchayat CEO Suruchi Singh said that this project is part of ‘Jal Raksha Abhiyaan’, under which water recharge structures are being built using GIS-based technology.
“Under the ‘Jal Raksha Abhiyaan’, by using GIS-based technology, water recharge structures are being built at different places, including hills and low-lying areas,” she told ANI.
“These structures are very beneficial as they recharge water, recharge the sub soil which means there will be more greenery, drinking water. It will help in farming,” she added.
She also informed that the District Panchayat is also planning a program aimed at crop diversification.
“We are also starting a ‘Jal Andolan’ in which by doing ‘andolan’ on crop diversification more hectares of land can be brought under crops which use less water,” she added. (ANI)
