Glasgow [UK], October 2 (ANI): Leaders of over 100 countries expressed their commitment to working together to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030.
The countries endorsed the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use at the COP26 summit.
“Over 100 leaders, accounting for more than 86 percent of the world’s forests, committed to working together to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030 in the Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests and Land Use,” a UK government statement said.
The countries which have endorsed the declaration include Canada, Brazil, Russia, China, Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the US, and the UK and cover around 85 percent of the world’s forests.
The statement said 12 donor countries pledged to provide USD 12 billion (£8.75 billion) of public climate finance from 2021 to 2025 to a new Global Forest Finance Pledge.
This will support action in developing countries, including restoring degraded land, tackling wildfires, and advancing the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.
In addition, 12 country and philanthropic donors pledged at least $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) to protect the forests of the Congo Basin. “This is the area home to the second-largest tropical rainforest in the world, which is critically important to global efforts to address climate change as well as to sustainable development in the region,” the statement said.
Fourteen country and philanthropic donors also pledged at least $1.7 billion from 2021 to 2025 to advance Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ forest tenure rights and support their role as guardians of forests and nature.
In addition at least £5.3 billion ($7.2 billion) of private sector funding has been mobilized, the statement said. (ANI)
COP26: ISRO to give solar calculator app to world, says PM Modi
Emphasizing the need for solar energy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is going to “give a solar calculator application to the world that would be helpful in deciding the location for the solar projects.
“ISRO is going to give a solar calculator application to the world,” PM Modi said while speaking at the ”Accelerating Clean Technology Innovation and Deployment” event here at COP26. “It can measure solar power potential through satellite data of any places in the world,” he added.
Underlining that the application will be helpful in deciding the location for the solar projects, he emphasized that it will also strengthen the One Sun, One World, and One Grid initiative.
The Prime Minister highlighted that “clean energy could be available everywhere, every time through a worldwide grid”.
He also said that the worldwide grid will strengthen the viability of the solar projects and resolve the issue of storage.
COP-26 is being held from October 31 to November 12 under the Presidency of the UK partnering with Italy. The high-level segment of COP-26, titled the World Leaders’ Summit (WLS), was held from November 1-2. Heads of state/government of more than 120 countries attended the summit.

Japan to allocate up to USD 10bn to support Asia’s decarbonization
Tokyo [Japan], November 2 (ANI/Sputnik): Japan plans to allocate up to $10 billion within the next five years to support effort toward Asia‘s decarbonization and to double its financial aid to foreign countries’ fight against climate change and natural disasters to $14.8 billion, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Tuesday at the COP26 summit in Glasgow.
“In addition to the $60 billion provided through private and government funding over the five years, which was announced last June, Japan intends to provide up to $10 billion over the next five years to support the decarbonization effort in Asia,” Kishida said.
The prime minister noted that the question of surging energy prices arises as “we are moving toward complete decarbonization of Asia and the world.”
“Japan intends to double to about $14.8 billion its financial assistance to third countries to implement measures in such area as natural disaster prevention,” Kishida added.
Tokyo also intends to allocate up to $240 million to support the forest preservation program, the prime minister noted. (ANI/Sputnik)
