Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 2 (ANI): This is a victory for Bengal, said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after winning from the Nandigram constituency on Sunday.
“I would like to thank everyone. Please adhere to COVID-appropriate behaviour. I request all to not take out victory processions. I urge everyone to go back to their homes now. Our first priority is to control the COVID outbreak. This is the victory of Bengal. Only Bengal can,” Mamata told TMC supporters outside her Kalighat residence in Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee has won from the Nandigram constituency by a narrow margin of 1,200 votes. She also walked on her feet instead of using a wheelchair that happened to her companion since March after sustaining injuries during campaigning in Nandigram.
Mamata claims manipulations done after declaration of results in Nandigram
Amid counting on votes on Sunday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that she has information that some manipulations were done after the declaration of results for the Nandigram seat.
Briefing the mediapersons, Mamata said, “Do not worry about Nandigram, I struggled for Nandigram because I fought a movement. It is ok. Let the Nandigram people give whatever verdict they want, I accept that. I do not mind. We won more than 221 seats and BJP has lost the election.”
“I accept the verdict. But I will move the Court because I have information that after the declaration of results there were some manipulations done and I will reveal those. BJP has lost the elections. They played dirty politics. We faced the horror of the Election Commission. We are grateful to the people for this landslide victory. I have to start working for COVID-19 immediately. The swearing-in will be a low-key event because of the prevailing COVID-19 situation,” she stated.
Earlier today, there were reports of Mamata winning from the Nandigram constituency. However, the counting of votes is still in the progress and Mamata was trailing by 9,862 votes.
Making the game of thrones in Bengal more interesting, Mamata chose Nandigram over her home turf Bhabanipur seat this time to test her fate in the 2021 elections. It was the agitation in Nandigram and Singur against the Left government’s land acquisition policies that made Mamata Banerjee the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
Nandigram witnessed a high voltage “Khela” (game of power) on April 1 in the second phase of West Bengal assembly polls.
The constituency has seen a direct contest between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her former ministerial colleague Suvendu Adhikari, who had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in December last year.
It must be added here that Adhikari had pledged that he would quit politics if he did not defeat Mamata by 50,000 votes in Nandigram.
People of WB chosen us as strong opposition, says Dilip Ghosh
The target we set for the West Bengal Assembly election, winning above 200 seats, was big but could not manage to achieve it. People of the state choose us as strong opposition, said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state chief Dilip Ghosh on Sunday.
Speaking to ANI, the state party president while expressing satisfaction with the numbers he got, has said that in the last election the BJP won three seats and this time it is nearly 80.
“We will look into what went wrong in the election. In the last election we won three seats and this time it is nearly 80. We had put a big target in front of us but we could not achieve it. However, what we have got is not less,” Ghosh said.
However, the people of the state have given the chance to come as a strong opposition in the state, he added.
Various senior leaders of BJP including Home Minister Amit Shah had held the rallies and roadshows in the state and expressed confidence over winning above 200 seats here.
“I went to several places in Bengal today. It has been confirmed that on May 2, Didi will exit from the state and the BJP government will be formed by winning more than 200 seats in the elections,” Shah had said during a public gathering in Ausgram on April 17.
