Guwahati (Assam) [India], November 23 (ANI): Former Chief Minister of Assam Minister Tarun Gogoi passed away on Monday. He was 84.
Giving information about his demise, Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi breathed his last at 5.34 pm on Monday at Gauhati Medical College.”
Gogoi whose health condition started deteriorating last Monday tested positive for COVID-19 in August.
The veteran Congress Party leader was on ventilation after suffering a multi-organ failure and was on dialysis.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday paid rich tributes to former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, saying he was one of the tallest leaders of the party, admired and respected for his extraordinary wisdom, vision and ability.
In a letter to Gaurav Gogoi, son of Tarun Gogoi, Sonia Gandhi said he was also held in great regard by former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
“With his long years of experience as an MLA, an MP, a Central Minister and Chief Minister of Assam, he was someone to whose unfailingly wise counsel and advice we could always turn to. I know in what great regard Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi held him,” Sonia Gandhi said.
She said he was Assam’s most universally loved and venerated public figure and the longest-serving chief minister of the state.
“For me, his loss is also a deeply personal one — I cannot forget the warmth and care he showed me on my many visits to Assam. During those visits, I saw how loved he was by all the many communities and people of Assam, how much he had done for them, and for their progress and welfare,” Gandhi said.
She said Tarun Gogoi leaves a precious and lasting legacy in the standards he set and in his immense contribution to national life.
“Your father’s life was cut short by this cruel pandemic, but he leaves a precious and lasting legacy in the standards he set and in his immense contribution to national life. He is now relieved from his suffering, and at peace. The Congress party will always honour his memory,” she said.

The former prime minister said Assam has lost a very good leader who always worked for the betterment of the poor and downtrodden people of the society.
“My wife joins me to convey to you and other members of your family our heartfelt condolences on this bereavement. We pray to the Almighty to give all of you the strength to bear this great loss with courage and fortitude,” Singh said.
Vice President, chief ministers condole death of Tarun Gogoi
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and were among leaders who expressed their condolences on the demise of Tarun Gogoi.
Naidu said Tarun Gogoi faithfully served the nation in various capacities with dedication.
“Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi. In his public life spanning over five decades, he served the nation in various capacities with dedication. My condolences to bereaved family members and followers. Om Shanti!” the Vice President said in a tweet.
Union Ministers, WB, Punjab CMs condole demise of Tarun Gogoi
Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, and chief ministers of States condoled the demise of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday.
In a tweet, Defence Minister Singh said, “Anguished by the demise of Assam’s former Chief Minister, Shri Tarun Gogoi ji. Blessed with a warm personality he made a notable contribution to Assam’s development and public life. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti!”
Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in a tweet in Hindi said, “The death of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who was dedicated to the empowerment of the poor, weak and backward sections, is an irreparable loss not only to the state but also to the country. My heartfelt condolences to his family and well wishers. Om Shanti.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh expressed sadness at the demise of three-time chief minister of Assam.
“Saddened to hear about the passing away of veteran leader and former Chief Minister of Assam for 3 terms, Tarun Gogoi Ji. My deepest condolences to his family, followers and well-wishers,” Banerjee said in a tweet.
Amarinder Singh said, “Deeply pained by the unfortunate demise of veteran Congressman and former CM Assam #TarunGogoi Ji. He was a visionary leader and played a pivotal role in rebuilding Assam. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and supporters. Rest In peace!”
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed his condolences and prayed for peace of the departed soul.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said Gogoi will be remembered for his commitment to the development of northeast India.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said Tarun Gogoi considered service to people of Assam as the ultimate goal of his life.
