Washington, DC, August 30 (ANI): As Nepal continues to reel from devastating floods, the US State Department said Saturday that it will provide more than USD 3.6 million in life-saving humanitarian assistance to the Himalayan nation.
The assistance includes up to three months of emergency food supplies for as many as 10,000 flood-affected households, the State Department said in a post on X.
“The United States is standing with the people of Nepal by providing more than $3.6 million worth of life-saving humanitarian assistance, including up to three months of emergency food assistance to up to 10,000 flood-affected households,” the department said.
The State Department also emphasized that the safety of American citizens remains a top priority, noting that US embassies in Nepal and China are working closely to assist Americans and support disaster relief efforts.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) issued an urgent public safety warning following reports of a sudden increase in the roar and water flow of the Bhote Koshi River.
Authorities urged residents and relief teams in downstream settlements to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant. The warning covers three major downstream districts that were severely affected by the catastrophic August 26 flash floods.
Communities along the Rasuwa riverbank, including areas near the Nepal-China border, have been instructed to closely monitor water levels. Emergency services and local administrative units in Nuwakot and Dhading have also been placed on standby.
The death toll from the catastrophic Rasuwa Bhote Koshi flash floods has risen to 675, with emergency teams recovering bodies and human remains across several downstream districts, according to the latest NDRRMA update. As of 6:30 p.m., 2,418 people remained missing or out of contact.
Reinforcing the government’s commitment to relief and reconstruction, Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah said Saturday that the government remains on high alert and will operate at full capacity until all flood-affected citizens are safe and rehabilitated.
Shah highlighted the scale of search-and-rescue operations being conducted under challenging terrain and weather conditions. Air and ground operations have evacuated more than 7,500 people to safety, including 279 workers trapped at various hydroelectric project sites.
About 18,708 security personnel from the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed, alongside 16 military and private helicopters that have completed 236 rescue missions.
International experts from India and China are also assisting relief and rescue operations on the ground. (ANI)
