NEW DELHI, Aug. 3 (ANI): President Droupadi Murmu on Monday praised India’s contingent for its outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, highlighting the achievements of the country’s women athletes, who won eight of India’s 13 gold medals.
In a post shared by Rashtrapati Bhavan on X, the president congratulated all 39 medal winners and the entire Indian contingent.
“I am delighted that India’s sportspersons have put up excellent performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. I am especially happy to note that women have brought us 8 out of the 13 gold medals won by India,” Murmu said.
“My hearty congratulations to all the 39 medal winners and every member of the contingent who contributed during the Games,” she added.
The president also expressed confidence that Indian athletes would continue to excel in future international competitions.
“I am sure that India’s sportspersons will bring greater glory to the country in the future international events,” Murmu said.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland formally handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the centenary edition of the Games in Amdavad in 2030, during the closing ceremony.
The 2030 Commonwealth Games will mark the second time India has hosted the event, making it only the second nation after Australia to stage the Games more than once. India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010.
The Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to India’s representatives, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi during the official handover ceremony.
India finished fourth in the medal standings with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — capping a successful campaign.
Although India won fewer medals than the 61 it claimed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the comparison is affected by changes to the competition program.
Thirty of India’s medals in Birmingham came in sports that were not included in the Glasgow Games. Despite sending a smaller contingent of 122 athletes, compared with 210 in 2022, India maintained its fourth-place finish and achieved a higher medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals.
Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian athlete to win two medals at the Games.
With the official handover complete, attention now turns to Amdavad, which will host the centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030. (ANI)
