ISLAMABAD, Aug. 3 (ANI): A series of road accidents, infrastructure failures and urban flooding incidents have highlighted persistent public safety and infrastructure challenges in Pakistan’s Sargodha region, according to Dawn.
In a major accident on the M2 Motorway near the Bhera interchange, a bus carrying pilgrims lost control and crashed into a stationary vehicle that had been pulled over for a tire change, causing the bus to overturn.
Thirteen people were seriously injured Saturday, including Raees, Mukhtar, Muhammad Sami, Faizan Ijaz, Ali Waris, Qamar Zulfiqar, Mahmood Hassan, Tasavur Ijaz, Nadeem, Zaheer Ahmed, Usman Ali, Shoaib and Muhammad Iqbal, Dawn reported.
Rescue 1122 personnel provided emergency medical assistance before transporting five critically injured victims to a hospital. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the crash.
Separately, the Sargodha deputy commissioner raised concerns over the use of substandard materials and poor workmanship in the city’s bazaar beautification project after newly installed pavements collapsed and monsoon runoff flooded the basements of nearby shops.
According to Dawn, officials from the deputy commissioner’s office said no tolerance would be shown for malpractice and pledged to address structural deficiencies in urban development projects to ensure higher construction standards.
Sargodha Division Commissioner Hafiz Shaukat Ali, along with officials from municipal, highway and water sanitation departments, inspected several infrastructure projects, reviewing deteriorating roads, inadequate drainage systems and neglected public utilities.
The commissioner visited development sites at the Sillanwali disposal station, Eidgah disposal station, City Road and Shaheen Chowk. He instructed officials to accelerate work using durable construction materials and directed water management agencies to keep disposal pumps operational to reduce flooding during heavy rainfall.
In a separate incident, two sisters, 18-year-old Samin Ashraf and 20-year-old Farwa Ashraf, were seriously injured when the roof of their home in Moradabad Colony’s Gali 12 collapsed shortly after midnight following heavy rains.
The house, built with traditional TR girders, collapsed suddenly, trapping both women beneath the debris before rescue workers pulled them out and transported them to a private medical center.
Heavy rainfall also caused water levels in the Chenab and Jhelum rivers to rise, flooding nearby riverbanks, damaging farmland and threatening surrounding communities, Dawn reported.
Emergency response teams safely evacuated about three dozen residents from flooded areas, while local authorities said flood preparedness drills had been conducted earlier to improve coordination among emergency agencies. (ANI)
