New Delhi, July 22 (ANI): India’s electronics manufacturing sector has expanded significantly over the past decade, with domestic production increasing nearly sevenfold from about ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26, while the industry now employs nearly 2.5 million people, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said on Wednesday.
According to the ministry, electronics exports also grew sharply during the period, rising from about ₹38,000 crore in 2014-15 to ₹4.24 lakh crore in 2025-26.
Mobile phone production increased 33-fold, from approximately ₹18,000 crore to ₹6.27 lakh crore, while mobile phone exports surged 165-fold, from about ₹1,500 crore to ₹2.59 lakh crore.
India now manufactures about 99.2% of the mobile phones sold domestically, with mobile phones becoming the country’s largest export category.
The government said a series of policy initiatives, including foreign direct investment (FDI) reforms, tax and labor reforms, and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, have helped strengthen the country’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
Tamil Nadu has emerged as a major beneficiary of the government’s electronics manufacturing drive, with several manufacturing facilities established across the state.
The government has approved two Electronics Manufacturing Clusters in Tamil Nadu—one at Manallur, covering 474.3 acres with a project cost of ₹587.47 crore, and another at Pillapaikkam, spanning 379.3 acres with a project cost of ₹424.55 crore.
The government has also expanded semiconductor talent development by supporting 315 educational institutions nationwide, including 61 in Tamil Nadu.
Under the Semicon India Programme, 12 semiconductor manufacturing projects have been approved across six states, representing total investment commitments of about ₹1.64 lakh crore. Commercial production has already begun at three facilities.
The government is also promoting semiconductor design through the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, under which 24 projects have been approved for financial assistance, while 105 startups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have received Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool support.
On artificial intelligence, the government said it has identified 20 indigenous sovereign AI model proposals for support and approved 58 AI Centers of Excellence across states and Union Territories, including two in Tamil Nadu.
The government added that the recently approved Semicon 2.0 program is designed to support the entire semiconductor ecosystem and is expected to generate additional investment opportunities for states, including Tamil Nadu. (ANI)
