Tel Aviv, Israel, July 13 (ANI): Israel is set to hold its next general election on October 27, following the completion of a full four-year parliamentary term by the Benjamin Netanyahu-led government, according to Israeli media reports.
The Times of Israel reported Sunday that Ofir Katz, a senior figure within the governing Likud party, confirmed the election date, which aligns with statutory requirements as the sitting Knesset concludes its full four-year term on July 17.
The development is historically significant, marking the first time since 1988 that an Israeli general election will be held exactly as scheduled.
The Times of Israel also reported that the Netanyahu administration will become the first Israeli government in more than five decades to complete its full four-year term. The decision to schedule the election in the fall follows a formal request from the ruling coalition to allow the parliamentary term to conclude as originally planned.
According to Israeli media reports, the Knesset will officially enter its election recess on July 17, the same day the legislature completes its term. The deadline for political parties to finalize and submit their candidate lists has been set for September 7.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who returned to power in 2022 after forming the most right-wing government in Israel’s history, has faced significant political challenges since Hamas’ surprise attack in October 2023, an event that dealt a major blow to his long-standing reputation on national security.
The Times of Israel further reported that the veteran leader continues to face corruption charges filed in 2019, which could result in a prison sentence if he is convicted.
Netanyahu also remains under intense domestic and international scrutiny over the direction of the ongoing regional conflicts involving Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran. (ANI)
