Kalaburagi (Karnataka) [India], July 9 (ANI): The Solapur Division of Central Railway has successfully commissioned the Standard KAVACH system on the 149.476-kilometer Solapur-Wadi section, marking the first deployment of the technology in the division, according to an official release.
KAVACH is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system under the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. It is designed to significantly enhance railway safety by preventing head-on and rear-end collisions while also enabling automatic SOS alerts from locomotives in the event of unusual stoppages within block sections. The system also allows locomotive pilots to manually trigger SOS alerts when required.
The Standard KAVACH system is a non-signaling-based version of the technology. It operates through continuous communication between KAVACH-equipped locomotives and railway infrastructure, supported by advanced radio-frequency identification (RFID)-based track identification technology that enables accurate train positioning and enhanced operational safety.
As part of the project, 1,234 RFID tags were installed and programmed across the Solapur-Wadi section in accordance with the approved design.
Comprehensive validation and field trials were conducted in compliance with Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) standards, including rigorous testing of head-on collision prevention, rear-end collision prevention, and SOS alert capabilities under various operating conditions.
The successful completion of these tests confirmed the system’s reliability and readiness for operational deployment.
The commissioning of the safety system was carried out by the Signal and Telecommunication Department’s Project Unit of the Solapur Division.
According to the release, the commissioning of the Standard KAVACH system on the Solapur-Wadi section marks another significant milestone in Indian Railways’ efforts to strengthen its safety infrastructure.
By leveraging advanced indigenous technology, the system is expected to enhance operational reliability, improve train safety, and support more efficient and dependable passenger and freight services.
The achievement also reflects the Solapur Division’s commitment to modernization, technological innovation, and the Government of India’s vision of building a safer, smarter, and more self-reliant railway network under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. (ANI)
