Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], July 5 (ANI): Another major phase in the dismantling of Ahmedabad’s Subhash Bridge has been completed, with five additional spans on the river side and the Shahibaug side of the bridge safely demolished as part of the ongoing project, according to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The corporation said the demolition was carried out by the contractor under the continuous supervision of engineering experts to ensure the operation was conducted in a planned and secure manner.
Officials maintained constant monitoring throughout the demolition process, with all prescribed safety standards and protocols strictly followed.
The latest phase marks further progress in the bridge’s dismantling, with the five spans removed without any reported safety incidents.
The operation was closely supervised by experts on site, with continuous monitoring to ensure compliance with established safety procedures at every stage of the work.
Constructed in 1973, the 453-meter-long bridge was closed on Dec. 4, 2025, after significant settlement was detected near Pillar No. 9. Subsequent inspections by experts from SVNIT, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Bombay revealed serious structural cracks in the pillars, prompting authorities to abandon an initial ₹236 crore restoration plan in favor of completely dismantling the aging structure.
The Gujarat government had initially approved a ₹236 crore project to restore the bridge and construct two parallel two-lane bridges.
The first phase of the demolition took place on July 1, when the AMC successfully dismantled three deteriorated spans of the 53-year-old bridge into the Sabarmati riverbed under controlled engineering supervision.
The city is now moving forward with plans to replace the old bridge with modern infrastructure. (ANI)
