TEXAS, July 1 (ANI) — Norway star Erling Haaland described his team’s victory as “bigger than football” after Norway celebrated its 2-1 win over Ivory Coast with its iconic “Viking Row,” securing a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16.
Norway advanced after Haaland scored a dramatic late winner in the 86th minute of Tuesday’s Round of 32 match.
The “Viking Row” is a well-known Norwegian football celebration in which supporters imitate the synchronized rowing of a traditional Viking ship. The display symbolizes unity, strength, and collective determination, with fans and players performing the gesture together in support of the national team.
Following the victory, captain Martin Odegaard led the celebrations by beating a drum while players and support staff performed the Viking Row. Supporters in the stands joined in, creating a unified display of celebration.
In a post on X, Haaland wrote, “This is bigger than football,” emphasizing the significance of the moment beyond the sport itself.
Antonio Nusa gave Norway an early lead before Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo equalized with an impressive solo effort. Haaland’s goal in the closing minutes sealed the victory.
The defeat ended Ivory Coast’s first-ever appearance in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup.
Haaland also reached several personal milestones, becoming the first player in 72 years to score in each of his first three World Cup starts. He extended his international scoring streak to 13 consecutive matches and raised his tally to 60 goals in 53 appearances for Norway.
Norway will face Brazil in the Round of 16 in New York on July 5.
