Aurangabad (Maharashtra) [India], May 8 (ANI): At least 16 migrant labourers were killed, and several others were injured, when a goods train ran over them between Jalna and Aurangabad in the Nanded Division of South Central Railway in Karmad police station area of the Aurangabad district.
The migrant labourers, who had been walking for several kilometres, were sleeping on the rail tracks when the mishap occurred, the railway officials said. Mokshada Patil, SP Aurangabad said police has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
“Early morning, a freight train ran over 16 labourers from Madhya Pradesh. We are investigating the matter,” Patil said. Ch. Rakesh, Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) of South Central Railway (SCR) speaking to ANI over the phone said: “An empty petroleum tanker train was moving from Cherlapally Station to Panevadi Railway Station. The incident occurred early this morning.
A high-level enquiry at the level of Commissioner Railway safety has been constituted.” According to Railways officials, migrant labourers were native of Madhya Pradesh working in SRG Company, Jalna in Maharashtra.
“As per the version of survivors they had left Jalna at 7 pm on May 7 by foot. They initially walked on the road (upto Badnapore) and later shifted onto the track towards Aurangabad . After walking for about 36 KMs, they became tired and sat on the track and most of them slept there causing the mishap,” read a statement by railway officials.

New Delhi [India], May 8 (ANI): Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday expressed grief over the death of 16 migrant workers, who were run over early this morning by a goods train in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad, and said relief work is underway and an inquiry has been ordered.
Taking to Twitter, he prayed for peace of the departed souls. “Relief work is going on, and orders for inquiries have been given. I pray to God for the peace of departed souls,” he said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Railway Minister regarding the Aurangabad train accident. “Extremely anguished by the loss of lives due to the rail accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
Have spoken to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and he is closely monitoring the situation. All possible assistance required is being provided,” Modi said in a tweet.

President Ram Nath Kovind has condoled the deaths of migrant labourers who were killed in a train accident in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad on Friday morning.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday offered condolences to the families of those killed in the Aurangabad train accident and said that he is pained beyond words at the loss of lives in the mishap.

I have spoken to Railway Minister Shri Piyush Goyal, concerned authorities in the central govt and railway administration to ensure all possible assistance. Railway Ministry orders inquiry into Aurangabad mishap
An inquiry has been ordered into the mishap in which at least 14 migrant labourers were killed and several other were injured when a goods train ran over them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section, Railway Ministry informed on Friday.
“During early hours today after seeing some labourers on track, loco pilot of goods train tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section.
Injured have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. Inquiry has been ordered,” the Ministry of Railways tweeted. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and local police have reached the spot. (ANI)Â
